Albequerque, NM – A man was shot Monday night outside of an Albuquerque church.

Police believe 55-year-old Billy Chavez and his ex son-in-law were involved in an argument inside the New Beginnings Church on Montgomery near Carlisle during a funeral.  The argument reportedly happened in the church foyer.

The men involved in the  argument were escorted outside by security personnel, who were attempting to separate the pair, when police say Chavez pulled out a gun and shot the man in the chest several times.  He then turned the gun on the security officers and shot twice missing them and emptying the revolver.

The suspect then fled around the church and into a waiting car and left the scene.  The plates were copied by security and given to the police.

The church was reportedly locked down by security, who rendered first aid to the victim, who is expected to survive the encounter.

The crime scene was secured and police later located Chavez and placed him under arrest.
